Graphic designer Caitlin Legere was asked to design a series of typographic posters that would later be applied to merchandise sold at her college. The project had free reign so she decided to choose a few unpublished poems of her own to have a deeper connection to the work she was doing.

The illustrative posters used quotes not directly written by me, but instead resonate with me on an emotional level. In addition to illustration, I used a combination of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to complete my designs.

Being an east coast native of Nova Scotia, the wilderness has always had a place in my heart. The poetry and imagery I choose often reflects that love. Typography can be experimental and expressive, so I took advantage of the techniques I learned in college to incorporate line, movement, colour and shape to my designs. Integrating imagery and texture to my posters from there was easy by choosing to tell a story between each word and letter.

Inspiration comes from finding joy in the plainest of sentences and using the language of type to iterate what it means to you. I try to let all my personal projects relate to something I hold dear; in this case it is home. It’s all about the oceanic views, the old friends and the will to leave it all to explore the world.

As a young designer, the design world is still a big adventure and some of my talents are still waiting to be discovered. However I have developed a strong illustrative flare throughout my years in college and I try to bring that into my work wherever possible. Funny enough, I didn’t think it was possible until a friend sent me a book by Emma Fitzgerald called “Hand Drawn Halifax”. It really inspired me to push the boundaries of fine art and design with its simplistic approach to geographical landmarks.

One eye-opening experience I had as a designer was a simple one. It is very easy to get swept up in perfectionism or becoming a negative critic when it comes to your own work. I found that pushing through the mistakes you find so horrible, and not scrapping a de-sign, illustration, painting, etc. at the first encounter of a mistake will make you a better designer and raise your confidence. Sometimes mistakes can be beautiful and maybe it can’t be appreciated right away, but perseverance through struggle will always lead to victory, no matter how small it may be.
