Adaptr is a digital multitool built for contemporary living. It is a device that enables you to create adapters through the use of a modular system of connectors and accessories. It includes a portable battery, flash storage and various connectors to make the device truly universal.

The introduction of the new Macbook Pro and iPhone 7 illustrate the constantly changing standards of the tech industry. There is a clear need for a consolidated tool that allows users to change between various connection standards (USB A / USB C / Lightning) with an aspect of modularity to connect to the design standards of the future. Colour material and finish were carefully selected to be consistent with the stylistic and material preferences of peoples devices. We wanted the first product to go with a variety of consumer electronics in varying styles. We're hoping to develop future products with more varied CMF options.

Our design team of two started off with quick and dirty sketches and quickly migrated to CAD (SolidWorks). The majority of the process work came from defining what connections the device needs, and how they would manifest themselves in terms of volume and PCB placement. After the basic stack-up was completed, we went through detailing and serval CMF exploration phases. From there we produced Keyshot renderings and Photoshopped in lighting and material details.

We are still in the process of gaining feedback as the project is just getting off the ground at this time. I think it will be interesting to see how people respond to an integrated adapter in this kind of format.
