Around the Corner
Around the Corner is a set of pieces which result from a glass blowing workshop which took place at Cencal da Marinha Grande coordinated by Joana Silva and supervised by Claudio Duarte and Pedro Alves. My goal was to explore the distortion of the material thank to the pressure of a corner put in a specific position. The result is a vertical ridge in an organic form generated by blowing the glass.
Then, bases were designed in brass in order to highlight the glass deformation creating a perfect bond between the organic glass forms with strict geometry brass edge. The balance point between the glass part on the metal base create a sense of levitation and lightness of the material.
Everything started in the glass workshop, It was about hand blown glass techniques without mold. My goal was to explore the distortion of the material thank to the pressure of a corner put in a specific position. I choose gold plated brass for the metal bases.
I started to design a metal piece with some corners, then the glass blower used these corners to blow the new shapes in glass. After the glass pieces were made I designed the brass bases. To design the metal components I used rhinoceros.
The feedback was quite positive. The combination between glass and brass created an interesting result. It was my first contact with hand blown glass and gave some knowledge to develop new ideas. The constant dialogue with the glass blower is very important in order to manage to make the desired shapes.
