Cássio Yoshiyaki's project is all about Pokemon. Pokemon has to be one of the most popular and loved cartoons/characters in the world. It is centered on fictional creatures called "Pokémon", which humans capture and train to fight each other for sport. (duh! I think everybody knows this :) The franchise began as a pair of video games for the original Game Boy, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo. The franchise now spans video games, trading card games, animated television shows and movies, comic books, and toys. Pokémon is the second-most successful and lucrative video game-based media franchise in the world, behind only Nintendo's Mario franchise.

I always love to draw cute characters with distorted proportions. People used to say that is my 'cartoonish style', unlike my other style with more serious content. All started because I've been working for Starlit Adventures, illustrating characters with simple 3D shapes, exploring colors and light. When characters have simple shapes, no complex textures and details (same for the places, scenarios where they are) you need to explore other aspects of painting. I loved it and decided to apply it, practice it with pokemons, in reference to the first gameboy games and tv series. Artists used to say that you need to practice fundamentals, I did it with pokemons.

I like to think about light while I'm painting. I guess people can see it through my artworks. No matter the 'shape style', the reasoning about light is the same. I admire the artwork of some artists like Ruan Jia, Jiyu Kaze, Daisuke Tsutsumi. They are huge inspiration for me as an artist.

Do not look for the right thing to do in art. There is no such a thing. There are only people trying to make the best what they can do, personal and professional, attending the marketing needs. There are different and beautiful styles. Find out what would you like to do.

Practice a lot. Get used to your own way of drawing and painting, so you will be able to see some behaviors that are good and some that are not for you as an artist. You will be able to observe how you make art and where you need to improve. Once in a while experiment different things in digital painting. If you always practice what you already know, insight opportunities will never happens. Prepare you mind to think creatively, looking for answers you still don't have. Learning is always for something that you don't know, and you will fail a lot because of it. It is not good or bad, it is just how learning is. It is good to have it in mind so you will not give up just because you couldn't do things right at first tries.

  1. I have so many childhood memories of playing Pokemon that I had the biggest smile on my face as soon as I saw those pictures - especially Charmander! He was always a favorite of mine. You can definitely tell that the artist focuses on light in his work, it's really beautiful. I love the advice he gives here as well.
