Pearly Yon's "Bonnie and Clyde" was designed for a micro distillery in Belgium. The brief required a pair of labels that would be applied to a small limited run of hand crafted gin. The sweeter tasting gin was to be called Bonnie and the stronger tasting gin was to be called Clyde.

I think a lot of people are attracted to the infamous pair because they were young and wild and free at heart. I wanted to romanticise the story of Bonnie and Clyde rather than make them seem like hardened criminals so I decided to do a type piece that reflected their nature and personalities. I started with pencil sketches and it progressed from there.

The inspiration? I fell in love with the nostalgic type of the 1930’s when researching the history of Bonnie and Clyde. All the letters were created from scratch. I’d describe my personal style as organic vectors shapes and lines. I am in awe of work done by other designers/illustrators and letterers but when it comes to my own projects I look for inspiration from history, nature, era’s, animals, theories, tiles, photographs of my travels, pretty much anything.

Persevere and true happiness will be yours. Ha ha ha. I’m kind of kidding but there is some truth in that. There were so many moments where I doubted myself and my ability and considered making a career change. It took a lot of late nights and thick skin to create work that I was eventually proud of. Now I do work that I am proud of all full time, not in my spare time.

  1. Beautiful lettering work. Can I ask what books or websites/classes you recommend to learn this type of art?
