Karl P. Egger from Vienna opened his hometown’s fist craft brewery. The Vienna Craft Distillery is a place open for experimentation with old, partly forgotten ingredients and natural flavours in order to create unique distillates. Trained engineer Karl turns mysterious alchemy into science. With his inspiration taken from all over the world, the full-time caterer dedicates his passion to capturing nature’s wealth of scents and bottling them unadulterated.

A distillery obviously focuses on alcoholic spirits. However the design of the “Edelbrand Series” aims to merge the creative act with the distillery’s fervor in a descriptive manner. Considering the limited budget and the selected, small first run of just about 170 bottles of “Edelbrand”, we’re striving for something that represents the hand crafted product and predominantly plays with the bottle.

The idea emerged from evaporating liquid in an alembic. Striving for a puristic transfer of natural fruit’s clean and pure essence, every bottle has been dyed by hand and therefore visually dipped into a sensual experience that is as rich in taste as it is diverse. Therefore the label was kept simple and the typography also responds to the gradient of the color.

It was mainly a crafting project with the challenge of producing extensive prototypes. The selection of colour and the workflow process were of particular importance in order to being able to produce the series economically by hand. After each bottle was labeled it was dyed in glass colour twice to accomplish the effect.

The response was through and through very positive. The client, who was providing his facility for the coulouring process, was even so excited that we had to persuade him not to dye all the bottles by himself. There is also great attention and acknowledgment by design blogs, e.g. “behance” and “designmadeingermany”.
