This project focuses on the redesign of packaging for colouring pencils. In stores, most pencil crayons come in rectangular boxes that would likely be thrown out or recycled. To decrease this waste and to make it fun for children, an elephant shaped, multi-functional package is developed. The trunk of the elephant can function as an easel and the package itself can be reused as an organizer to store other materials. A pocket sketchbook and animal themed colouring book are included to let children start colouring and drawing right away.

I wanted to create a package that was reusable and could last a long time. Wood was used for its durability and provides a sturdy base for the easel part of the package. Bright colours, playful patterns, and the elephant shape were used to appeal to children, the target audience.

The label design was drawn using pencil crayons, retouched in Photoshop, and the composition was finalized in Illustrator. Lasercutting and etching were used to cut the wood and the exterior pieces were glued together. The pencil crayons were etched with the brand and name of the colour, which was then rubbed in with oil pastel.

This project has received good responses from classmates for its simple design and effectiveness. After the instructor talked about creating packaging that can have more than one life, this project has taught me to think more about sustainability in design.
