Graphic Designer and Illustrator Daniele Simonelli was commissioned by the London based app Great Little Place to design a poster with 15 cities from around the world, focusing on their main buildings and landmarks.
Some of the greatest cities in the world have been captured in this iconic illustration, showcasing some of the most famous buildings and landmarks from each city in question. This is like a travel bucket list, reminding you to go and explore a little, whenever you glance at your four walls.
About the inspiration, when Great Little place asked me to design this poster, I started a huge research on the net to see how other designers have challenged a similar task, there I figure out that the most of the people have done a similar work, designing the main buildings on the same line, as a skyline, so I decided to try something different: I started to synthesize the maps of entire cities in tiny illustrations based on the same grid. If you are writing to me, I think it worked 🙂
Defining a personal style is not something easy, I may say my illustrations are basically neat and clear, based on simple geometric shapes (“make it simple” docet) but sometimes this make a cold feeling, so I like to use textures and dynamic colors. I take my inspirations from whatever is around me: a nice poster on the Tube, a classic art exhibition, cartoons, book covers and so on. Speaking about other illustrators, I really admire the work of a lot of different illustrators and designer, to much to do a list!
Just two advice: work hard and try to have a “net” of colleagues to ask advice about everything, from how much to charge for your last commission to “which one of this two illustration is more similar to a peacock?”. Time by time I figured out that the most of designers are very nice people, and they usually answer you if ask with kind manners.
