Colour Collective is a Twitter based weekly challenge where you make work based on a single colour. Any theme, any medium. A lot of artists joins this challenge to showcase their artworks.

Every Saturday on twitter, @Clr_Collective sets a colour and on the following Friday at 19.30GMT we post the pictures we have created using the #Colour_collective - it's any medium, any subject as long as you include the colour somewhere. It's fantastic and every week my twitter timeline fills up with the most amazing artwork. This image was created to auction off for Save the Children, and their refugee appeal. Lots of people did one and I think we ended up raising nearly £2,000 for them in the end, which is really amazing!

I usually create a lady in a dress for my colour collectives but for this I decided that fashion wasn't really serious enough and I wanted something a bit deeper than a fancy dress to sell. I decided on painting a lady as usual but this time her hair and dress would be the night sky, which sort of says 'we're all under the same sky' and to try and treat people a little bit better in our day to day lives, because we're all the same really.

I love mythology, especially Greek, and so my inspiration for this was Nyx, the goddess of the night.

I illustrate for children mostly, so I think a lot of what I draw and paint suits them - bright colours and fun themes. Anything by Disney is inspiring - not necessarily the messages behind the films, but the art direction, background illustration and skill of the animators is always inspiring to me. Paint and draw as much as you can, use twitter to make artist friends (I have some brilliant ones), and also don't take feedback to heart - use it to make your art better!

About Natalie Smillie

Natalie Smillie moved from England to Scotland with her husband a few years ago and ended up studying for a HND in Visual Communication at the College of North East Scotland. It was one of the best decisions of her life - Natalie really enjoyed it and made some really good friends. At the end of the course, she applied to the Bright Agency for representation - they agreed and since then she has worked with so many amazing clients, from massive publishers to individuals needing commissions. It's been a great year and a half and Natalie can't wait to see what else the future holds! See more of her works on Behance or her website.
