Duesenberg was an american car company that set the standard of luxury and performance. The Depression led to the company's eventual closing and Raleigh Haire was wondering what kind of car they would make today. He saw a Duesenberg in a museum a long time ago, and its presence, size, and grandeur always stuck with him. Read on and enjoy!

I named the car Hyperion, after a science fiction book I recently read that I really enjoyed. The project was inspired by a quote I read by Ken Dallison, “There was a time when the beauty, style, and performance of great cars captured America’s imagination.” The process for the this project involved a lot of sketching and thinking initially as I tried to find the main themes of the last Duesenbergs to be produced. As I found an aesthetic vocabulary, I wanted to also find some functional aspects that would set the Hyperion apart from other luxury vehicles.

I used prismacolor pencils, paper, and Photoshop for this project. A lot of my ideas came from research of the older Duesenberg vehicles. But I also found ideas and inspiration from mansions, estates, and many different old aircraft, predominantly the YB-49 Flying Wing.

The biggest challenge was finding aesthetic themes from a car company that has been closed for 78 years and turn them into a fresh and futuristic vehicle, but that was also the allure of the project. Many changes were made in the sketching phase.
