Brazil based illustrator Fred Birchal tried to reunite some of the most expressive settings from some popular movies and TV, presenting architecture and production design as the art expression they are. There are a lot of beauty in settings, they are extremely meaningful and where a good part of the history happens, therefore, it is fair making a series only for them.

Actually, that’s the main idea of my work, I make series of objects that can represent, alone, a whole movie, tv series, bands and everything that is part of pop culture. I enjoy the symbology that the objects contain.

During a very long and idle moment in my life, I decided beginning to draw. One of those days, while watching TV, I had an idea. I Thought It was very interesting the way you can actually recognize the characters by their clothes. The way a character dresses can say a lot about it. I realized that this could also apply to music personalities. But besides the clothes, a lot of other stuff can define a movie, a TV series or a music artist or album. Cars have enormous visibility in movies, as an example. My idea was identify a popular icon by the objects used by it.

My inspiration comes from art in a very open way, I don’t know if I can circumscribe it in only a few aspects or influences. You can take many ideas from just one movie: Costume, movie set, photography, etc. Therefore, I believe my inspiration comes from movies, tv, music... any artistic expression, in all it’s forms, everything counts.

My style is something between minimalism and flat design. I like basic forms, circles and straight angles. I Always try to be careful and pay attention to details and at the same time, develop it with simplicity. Truth is my technique, as my style, came from graphic design, specially brand design. I create symbols.

Van Gogh, Andy Warhol, Norman Rockwell and Will Eisner, each one in a different way, will always inspire me.

Do what you love, believe in your work. What’s really cool in art is that it doesn’t matter what you do, there will always be someone to like it. Don’t be afraid to draw and don’t worry too much about techniques, just try to make something that looks nice for yourself or for who’s going to look at it.

About Fred Birchal

Brazilian artist Fred Birchal from Belo Horizonte, graduated with a degree in graphic design, however, the acquisition of the designer title doesn’t say much about his interest in art as a consumer, scholar or artist. Since his early years he showed a certain creative impetus. The school desks and his notebooks used to serve as a canvas for sketch of the impressions that invaded his senses were his first creative laboratory. Over time, he found references that came to guide not only his small daily subversion of the school supplies, but also his academic and professional production.
