Every year there is a competition in Lisbon called "Santos Populares" where they give the same form of a sardine to illustrate June's biggest party (June is the month of celebrations and festivities for the Popular Saints throughout the country on the nights of St. Anthony, St. John and St. Peter.) This year it was a free theme.

I always start translating my ideia with a paper and a pencil, even if it's not complete or the final one. Making it digital, I use Illustrator to make the form and photoshop to finish it (and play a little more) with textures and brushes. I'm influenced a lot by silkscreen, linocut and their unexpected (and not so much) "errors".

I'm having wonderful feedbacks! It's the fourth year I'm responding to the competition's brief and it's always was so funny to making it alive that it was fine!!

About Catarina Couto

I'm Portuguese, have a Graphic Design degree and made Erasmus in Germany. I developed my skill of not knowing how to draw and my friends buying me calendars in the end of the year. In a parallel universe am a trapeze artist. In the current one i've been into some exhibitions and i'm looking for some new projects.
