The past summer Haley Renken interned for a startup app called Flux. Flux is an NYC nightlife app that allows members to buy cover charge for bars and clubs through the app to skip lines to enter. When Haley joined the team, they had just launched their first version of the app. His main project over the summer was to redesign a new version of the app. Apart from the app needing to be simplified, it also needed a solution to allow users to buy cover charges up to one week in advance, and to improve the bottom slider to add group members.

I worked along the side of my boss to create wire frames of different ways the app screens could work. From mocking up different app screen designs, I could easily see what worked and what to expand upon.

I would say my work has two different sides. One side is very experimental and created by analog processes followed by digital manipulation. My other design style used in many of my illustration and UX/UI projects is very minimal and flat. Some of my inspirations and favorite designers include the studio Sawdust, Jessica Walsh, Ai Weiwei, and Camille Walala.

My best advice to give to aspiring artists is that experimentation is the foundation to design. The best projects develop through experimentation instead of being planned out from the beginning. It also helps to find a role model designer to follow. Revisiting old sketchbooks and projects is never a bad idea, and I highly advise keeping close track on process stages of projects.

Haley Renken is currently a senior finishing up her BFA in graphic design at Rhode Island School of Design. This past fall semester, she studied advertising as an exchange student at Central Saint Martins, part of the University of the Arts London. She started off as an illustrator and painter, and moved into more digital formats in college.
