Folded was made for a classroom project - Folding Furniture. It is relaxing folding seating which can be placed in spaces like a living room, bedroom, balcony. After folding, it transforms into a dynamic shape which has elemental value in the space in which it is to be used.

I wanted to step out of my comfort zone of using lines and try experimenting with the folding of concave and convex curves which after folding transforms into a form that adds value to the space in which it is to be place. Nature being the best source of inspiration , I decided that after folding the seating should transform into a leaf.
The material to be used is teak wood for the body and leather to be used for seating accompanied with brass hardware. The classic combination!

FOLDED started with initial brainstorming about different kinds of relaxing activities and the analysis body postures during such activities. Initial sketches were made from which few were selected and refined.
Followed by making 1:1 free hand sketches of the type of curves I wanted FOLDED to have. Later the freehand curves were refined using AutoCad. Many 1:5 MDF models were made in order to understand the working of the seating and for figuring out the locking system for the same. Extensive material explorations were made to understand the hardware that is to be used for the seating. More than software usage, efforts were channelized to make the 1:1 prototype of the seating.

People found the transformation of the seating to a leaf really interesting.
From this project I learnt that it is really important for one to prototype a product. It gives you a deeper insight to make changes if required and also helps one to understand the final look and feel of the product.
