A few months ago I saw some images of a weekend house designed by Luciano Kruk http://www.lucianokruk.com/en/casa-h3/ and I thought it looked really cool. I'm a big fan of concrete structures and clean lines so I thought this could be a perfect hobby project to do in my spare time.

The original photos were great but I wanted to make the house a bit more inviting. Concrete tends to be too cold for most people. I thought I could make the surroundings look cold, wet and foggy so the building would look cosier in contrast. Also I redesigned the interior quite a bit. I used warm toned wood for the kitchen and swapped the funiture but I still managed to keep the original simplicity of the interior. The lit fireplace and warm interior lights also helped a lot to achieve the feeling I wanted.

Apart the SUV I modeled and textured everything myself in 3ds Max. I don't like to use premade assets, this helps to add more originality to my work. It was important to get the hero tree on the terrace right so I used a great procedural modeling tool called SpeedTree to make it. Every fallen pine needle, pebble and grassblade on the ground is actual geometry. The ground itself is heavily tessellated and displaced with a custom height map I made in Substance Designer. I also used that tool to create the board formed concrete material for the building. For rendering I used Corona Renderer for the first time and I'm fallen in love with it. I'ts really intuitive to use! I did the post-production in Photoshop. I used an inverted Z-depth pass for the fog effect and added some color correction and curves adjustments.

The main reason I like to do personal projects like this is to have the opportunity to try out new softwares and methods. This time I was pretty pleased with the results so I'll definitely incorporate some of them into my workflow.

Stay tuned because I'm already working on detailed interior shots of the project!
