Tilly Goodier-Page's lettering series is based around coloured paper. She mainly used POSCA paint markers as she wanted the challenge of only using a few colours so she could concentrate on finding different shading techniques. Tilly has been wanting to develop her lettering skills and this seemed like an interesting project to help her do that. It is an ongoing series of lettering - as each piece of lettering is finished she'll be adding them to the series.

I've recently done a few pieces of lettering - one on black card and another on grey. I really enjoyed the process of sketching each piece out and refining it multiple times to get the right balance between the letterforms. When these pieces were finished I thought about a series of lettering on coloured paper as I thought this would be more interesting than black and grey. I know I wanted to use different media so I picked POSCA paint markers at random from all the equipment I had. The paper was chosen based on how the colours would match each other. I started with orange and pink - I'll be using purple and reds and finish on green and blue paper.

I've stuck to the basics and simply used pen, pencil, POSCA paint markers and white gel pens to help refine the edges of my lettering. I pick a word or phrase that I personally like or think will create an interesting piece of lettering. I then spend some time drafting up different layouts and looking at how each letterform looks next to each other - this is how I get the right balance. When I've chosen the best layout I spend a lot of time refining it - this includes repeating the lettering by using tracing paper so I can alter areas. This is also the time where I see if I can add any swashes or flourishes to my lettering to make it more interesting. With each piece of lettering I do I try to reflect the meaning of the words in the layout of the final design. I finish each piece by using tracing paper to copy it onto the coloured paper. It then takes about 6 layers of a POSCA white paint marker to get the bright white I'm wanting. The details to the lettering i.e shading and the background I add in at the end.

Each piece of lettering takes a while so it's helped me get my process right, starting with initial sketches - before I started this series I wasn't doing this and I was struggling to come up with letter combinations that I liked. It's also pretty fun to use different media.

About Tilly Goodier-Page

Tilly Goodier-Page is currently a student at Staffordshire University studying a BA (hons) in Graphic Design. She never really had any interest in type until her first year in the university. That was when she realised that every project she was doing was mainly type based. Halfway through her second year, she found her love for type through hand lettering. Tilly loves the technical side of typography with the simple things such as kerning, tracking and leading - she'll happily do it for hours. But she mainly enjoy hand lettering due to there being no rules - well, except making sure the lettering is legible. Her other design love is editorial - grids, layouts etc. She enjoys the process of finding the right layout to fit your concept but also enjoy the practical side of physically making the book yourself and binding it however way you want to - it gives her a more sense of fulfilment when she have done the whole process herself. Tilly wants to continue developing her lettering, preparing for graduation and getting some graphic design work done that can be included in her portfolio. She wants to look at different lettering techniques so she can have her personal solid style.
