Billy Harris, a 19-year-old digital artist said that 'Manifestation' is a collection of photo manipulations that incorporate the human figure, urban environments and elements, and atmospheric/natural scenery. Too often in certain situations, humans are pressured to act, feel, think, or use objects in way that only reflects their position, and not the entirety of their being. With this project, Billy aimed to display the soul of a being or the intangible force and effect behind an object should exhibit its properties in any setting it may be placed in. These forces have power over their surroundings and display the true placement of that human or object in the world.

This project was created by meshing some of the styles I have been working with in the past few months. These styles include geometric abstraction of photographs, inspiration from intaglio processes, gradient maps, and overlaying of cloud images. There are also multiple examples of long exposure photography within certain pieces.

The view of Laramie, Wyoming from the roof of my home was a large inspiration visually, as was the work of Neil Krug for its color relationships and abstract portraiture and the work of Chuck Anderson for its overlay effects. Conceptually, the project was inspired by a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay "Self-Reliance." Although the quote is directed at the relationship of the soul and time, this dynamic inspired thought over the relationship of the soul and the different settings and environments it experiences over time. "Time and space are but physiological colors which the eye makes, but the soul is light: where it is, is day; where it was, is night; and history is an impertinence and an injury if it be anything more than a cheerful apologue or parable of my being and becoming."

I would describe my style as an emphasis on either abstract photo manipulations or abstract symmetrical 3D pattern work. Although they are two completely separate visual realms, I love working in both styles, and some concepts are displayed more interestingly through a particular style, while sometimes the styles work best meshed together. Although I am an aspiring artist and find myself looking for advice far more often than I find myself giving it, the best advice I can give to fellow artists is attack projects conceptually. When I have a sound basis for why I am creating something and the meaning it will exhibit, the creative process falls in place more fluidly.

To create 'Manifestation,' I used a Canon Rebel t3i to capture most images, and Adobe Photoshop to edit and create the final pieces. Some image elements within pieces were taken on the camera of my iPhone 4s.

  1. This art is so cool and kind of puts you in a trance, if that makes sense. It's so pleasing to look at and interesting, too, that it captures your attention; literally! Love it.
