Alex Hernandez's "Need to Knead Bread Delivery Co." was a recent project he took on with the general objectives of creating a branding system for a made-up company, which he called Need to Knead. He was then tasked with creating the representational marks and logos, brand extensions such as a website and a mobile app, collateral, and more.

I decided to take on a on-demand bakery that would deliver clients a box of ingredients, which in turn would allow them to bake their own fresh loaves of bread. It’s pretty much a more unique take on the saying, “fresh out of the box”. Now, while we did not have to think too much about the business sides of the company, I did want to try to make it as believable and realistic as it could be.

To start off, I was given the prompt of making, and branding, a company or service based on mail-delivery. Some examples given to me as starter ideas were the Netflix DVD delivery service, and Dollar Shave Club. I then thought of how bread relates to my life (which is another whole story upon itself) and decided to create a bakery that would deliver products based on a monthly subscription.

I know a lot of people associate me with a more technical side of design, and I can agree (As I slowly hide behind the latest issue of WIRED magazine). But I can’t say I have a particular style to associate with. Since i’m still young and have a whole career ahead of me, I want to explore as many different styles with my design as I can, and see what I like to work with best. But I also must say that sticking with a particular style (Other than with illustration styles) may not be the best thing to do. Why not have a wide range of styles that I can create and work with that can potentially suit many different clients down the road? If that makes any sense.

Now, my inspiration list is in flux right now as I discover more and more artists and agencies that I greatly appreciate, but here are a few:

Illustrators:

  • Guy Shield, out in Australia. His illustration style is one of my favorites, and it would be a dream to be able to draw like that.
  • Coen Pohl, based in Amsterdam is a great artist working more with geometric art and urban structures
  • James Oconnell, based in the UK. His style is one of the most unique that I’ve seen, and is a must see
  • Brian Miller is another great illustrator to check out
  • Raul Anguilla and his work for WIRED magazine
  • Vincent Mahé, especially his "750 Years in Paris" project
  • Agencies:

  • DKNG out in California. They create a lot of cool things in their studio, and they focus more in the music and entertainment industries.
  • WIRED Magazine or any other Condé Nast-managed publication. They’re all great.
  • Bethany Heck and the Microsoft Power BI Team
  • Chad Michael Studio based here in Dallas, working on a range of very elaborate and highly detailed projects
  • The Distillery out in Australia
  • The Design Surgery in the UK

The main point of advice that I’d give to my fellow designers is to make sure you’ve mastered the art of time management. I can’t emphasize this enough, and I don’t think I would be where I am today if it weren’t for that. And also, I’m currently learning this, but don’t just make design, or any art, all you do with life. It is really important to just take a breath every once in a while, step back, and do or find something else you really love to do. I personally want to get back on my bike as soon assets out and it gets warm enough.

This is something I struggle with. For a long time, I thought the best work that I could create would mean creating the best designs that fit the current style trends. I later decided to call this nonsense, and just started to design the way I found to be beautiful in my eyes. Just creating things in my own way and not really falling in line with every other designer was really refreshing and rewarding. It made me love designing a lot more. This will also help establish my own personal style these next few years, and if people like it, then great!

    About Alex Hernandez

Alex Hernandez is currently a student at the University of North Texas, studying towards a degree in Communications Design. It’s a rigorous program, and it doesn’t leave too much time for anything else other than design. Haha, on a good day, he can squeeze 5 hours of sleep between all of his homework. Alex is starting to work more towards setting up his future career, and trying to see if he can start any freelance work. However, he's finding it quite difficult while still in school. His future aspirations right now are just to keep working towards graduation, developing a solid style that he enjoy working with a lot, and start to reach out to fellow designers like himself. He also plan on delving deeper into the world of illustration, and hope to start up his own design studio or freelance shop. See more of his works on Behance or his Dribble.
