Panama Plus is a subculture festival, which has existed in Munich since 10 years. A few years ago, Moby Digg and Susanne Steinmaßl was asked to curate the cultural part of the festival and to work on the identity. Their curational work mainly focuses on "space". How public space can be transformed to a platform for art for instance.

For the Panama Plus 2015 we thought about space within space and how we could give artists an empty white canvas (space) without giving them a canvas. Therefore we decided to build houses within a huge hall, representing the white canvas (metaphorically). During the design process we also thought about how we could create space in our design. After a while we realized that deleting parts of images (more or less a glitch effect) would create hidden space in an image. We really liked that idea and went for it. The minimalist shapes then could be referred to as the artistic space. In general, we think design has to be pure and powerful. It’s great if some people really don’t like it and others love it. In the friction is the new so to say.

Our work strongly relates to color and the creation of visuals. We almost always come up with some kind of object or form, which later can be transformed in various ways. Definitely we go to a lot of exhibitions and look at plenty of books – not so much for the actual search for concrete, project-related inspiration, that would be wrong. But to train your eye, your visual knowledge. The more you have seen, the more you’ll be able to combine, restructure, destroy. You have to know the rules, before you can destroy them knowingly. Also we travel a lot. And we mean travel, not vacation.

The first thing we try to teach our assistants is a strong attitude towards design. In German we have that word "Haltung", which describes it perfectly. Talking about design and your work in a distinctive way is fundamental. Also, never stop learning new genres. Design is so much more than your passion for visually breathtaking work. There is code, science, fashion, architecture, art, traveling… If you really want to develop, throw yourself out there. Trust me you’ll never want to come back.

About Moby Digg

Moby Digg started as a daring idea on the other side of the planet: In Buenos Aires. They wanted to go to a place, where they don’t speak the language, don’t know anybody and where they would have to start from point zero. Korbinian and Maximilian of Moby Digg studied something totally unrelated to design at that time, but they were and are strong believers in auto-didactic learning. They never studied design, code, animation or music, they just used every source of knowledge about it to learn ourselves. After they came back to Munich, they started to do a lot of cultural work: festivals (AABER, Panama Plus), exhibitions, talks and so on. Generally, a lot of their work at the studio is still self initiated. They follow, what they think is great to work on and contact with whom they’d like to work: Internet yuche! See more of their works on Behance or their website.

  1. Is there anyone/ a designer of these panama posters that could tell me which font they have used with the main letters on the poster? The font used in the words 'Panama plus'? I would much appreciate if anyone can tell me what the specific font used here. Thanks
