Plywood Lamp

The decorative lamp has a complex irregular sculptural form. Constructively, this lamp can be made of plywood or MDF 10mm and 21mm thick. The lamp source is a LED stripe. This lamp can be used as an interior sculpture or an additional source of lighting.

There are two factors that play a key role in creation of this form: emptiness and negative cavity. It's like a highlighted cave space, some space we want to get in, but we will never be able to do that. All that remains is to watch the life of this space staying outside forever. Materials and colors of this lamp were selected to emphasize the main characteristics of complex geometry.

The model was designed using Rhinoceros and Grasshopper software. A special script allowed me to calculate the center of gravity and the system of pendants. Visualization in 3ds Max and Corona Renderer, V-ray. 2d scheme made in Photoshop, CorelDRAW and Illustrator.

This project is my first experience of using parametric modelling instruments in lighting design. I hope it'll get positive reviews and I'll also be extra motivated to continue my experiments in this direction. And of course I would like to make prototype of this lamp.

  1. This is the most beautiful lamp I've ever seen. I'm blown away. Wow!
I think I know the answer to this question, but are you interested in selling a copy of the drawing files? Then I will get someone to laser cut a copy and use the long dark winter evenings to build a copy for my wife for her 40th birthday present :-)
