During Yairon Martinez's education at the College of Design in Raleigh he initiated a daily challenge to make something, anything; to somehow bridge that gap he saw between great work and the level of his production. At this point he had been exposed to photography so Yairon decided to start experimenting with the medium. Let's see what he came up with.

At the point in which I shot this series, which any attempt to accredit this technique to me would be largely mistaken, the now popular drama “True Detective” hadn’t been released. The concept of re-exposing film to light is a process found early in both photography and cinema. I literally started capturing the environment around me. I went outside and shot the beautiful forms of pine trees around my house.

I contrasted that with self-portraits. Without truly understanding the implications of visually blending my environment with myself, I created images that conceptually spoke to the idea of the individual and their growth through nurture. How irrefutable the notion is that our surrounding slowly etches unto us.

I feel that my visual direction aligns with the effects of post-modern thinking and this digital age we’re all experiencing. I’m convinced that style is simply a personal response through self-filtered culture and my current aesthetic is an embrace of the digital canvas.

I would encourage artists to always be perfecting their craft and try to find daily moments to make. Don’t be shy to experiment with every parameter at your disposal and always be inquisitive of new tools. Most of all, meet people who are doing cool shit, collaborate and find inspiration in weird places.

  1. Awesome concept. These are very well done and I must say that even without being a photographer, I could see where you were going with these!
