I was asked to create an illustration to help promote the launch of an additional floor to The LillianDaph Store (home interiors/interior design), which also coincided with its first birthday. The store is very proactive with creative collaborations/workshops and sharing on social media.

The initial idea was to illustrate either the new floor from within or newly available products, of which I took photos and made notes. The client also casually suggested the possibility of an exterior illustration at some point, which I quickly realised was going to have more impact for the launch if I could make it particularly interesting. My preferred medium is ink so it felt natural to create the initial illustration in my usual style. I then developed my idea around the build up to the launch which included a preview evening/party. The illustration needed to convey a kind of excitement leading to the launch party along with having a 'fashion' feel.

I created the illustration with ink and watercolour in a loose style and then worked in Photoshop to create four frames based on this one illustration, changing the colour and detail a little each time to that the theme would change from daylight to evening and then into the night with a lively party going on upstairs.

The response to the project (both to the client and to me directly) has been fantastic and the client has also had prints made and used the daylight frame as their new profile image on social media. I am also receiving enquiries for commissioning similar illustrations, both animated and in print. If this project has taught me anything its to follow my gut instinct as to what I think will work!

I hope you like my work. More can be perused at gillwrightdesign.com and you can follow me on: Instagram @gillwrightillustration ; Twitter @cococartoon ; Behance @gillwright2505 Thank you!

I graduated from Northumbria University in 1993 with a degree in Fashion Design and worked in the industry for 10 years. Working increasingly on the visual presentation and promotional side of things, I added some Graphic Design training and was offered a position in an agency. I worked there for 15 years, first as Graphic Designer/Illustrator then Studio Manager. In 2016 I launched independently with gillwrightdesign.com focusing more on my real passion, illustration and although I choose fashion as my main subject, I also love to respond to other requests and have illustrated nature, buildings and more. I work both traditionally and digitally but my favourite medium is ink with some digital manipulation.
