Raya is a luxury real estate and interior furnishings brand established in 1965 in Mysore, India. Initially established as a house of traditional craftsmanship, Raya ventured into the real estate market by collaborating with international luxury real estate developers to create unmatched, personalised experiences.

This project was part of a 4 month pre-thesis at Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Bangalore, India. In a city like Bangalore – flooded with real-estate projects, promoted by established brands – the challenge was to develop an unique brand identity from scratch.

The visual framework of Raya’s identity is based on topography. The flow of these contour lines represent regions and the organic expansion of their business. The tree-bark pattern of the topography represents lineage. Each terrain is unique, like a thumb-print, which is characteristic of the multi-layered customisation Raya provides to customers – enabling them to define their own idea of luxury.

This visual system of topography was then translated into various collaterals through contour lines and paper marbling. To make this luxury tactile, print techniques such as gold foiling and embossing were used.

The initial execution stage involved sketching and creating drafts to develop an overarching system. An intensive type and colour study was carried out as part of the branding exercise. Minion Pro was used as a structure for the word mark. The custom type was created on Adobe Illustrator – along with contour lines and stationery. Adobe InDesign was used to create the Raya Brand Guidelines book.

I received great feedback from my tutors and peers at college. The reaction so far has been pleasing and positive with supportive comments, especially on the visual framework of the identity and colour palette. Behance recently featured 'Raya' in their curated Graphic Design gallery.
