David Bowie is one of illustrator Eric van den Boom's all-time heroes. He spent so much time listening to his great music whilst drawing, that it seemed only natural for him to do a portrait. He just recently opened a modest webshop and this illustration is available as a museum quality Giclée print. It’s a very limited run of only 40 prints, signed, numbered and stamped.

It has been in the back of my head for a long time to do this portrait. I figured it would be nice to have and 80ties colour pallete and lettering. Also I wanted to do something with sort of light rays going over his face, which was inspired by the movie poster of Metropolis that’s hanging on our wall. First I sketched the illustration, based on a reference photo of him in his thin white duke period. Then I traced the pencil sketch on my light table with brushes and ink. Then digitally layering on colours and patterns to make them pop. Finally drawing the lettering in 80ties style. I thought it would be a nice mix, to take reference from his thin white duke period and clash it with an 80ties colour pallet and lettering.

Basically his music and David Bowie as an artist. I went to see the exhibition about him in the beginning of this year in Groninger Museum here in The Netherlands. The moment I heard about the exhibition I immediately ordered tickets. I would describe my illustration style as strong sort of bold line work with small colourful patterns. Vintage with a modern touch, elegant with an edge. I begin my projects with pencil sketches that I then traces on a lightbox with a brush and ink. Someone said once that my images shimmer and move as though they’re being blown by a fan. I guess that’s a good way to describe my style.
