The Smokestack House by Filip Małecki in collaboration with his friend Bartlomiej Ordon came from an idea of an Old Wire Factory. The factory was something they constantly see so they thought about giving a new life to the Smokestack House. They knew that the place was ideal for residential since the place was relatively quiet and peaceful, but the idea was not to live in the middle of it instead, above it. Thus, their project Smokestack House.

The inspiration to create this design was an area of The Old Wire Factory in Gliwice. The factory was placed in the center of town and has great revitalization potential. We have come up with an idea to put the house on the top of 45m unused smokestack. Because of that we’ve achieved a height that is available for housing, especially for single family houses. The proposed design of the house has many advantages like any skyscraper apartments. The design allows the tenants to see the historic buildings of The Old Wire Factory and much of the city center.

Meanwhile, the shape of the house was created in such way that the elevation is expanding toward interesting objects on the map of the city such as Town Hall, Radio station Gliwice, Botanic House in Chopin’s Park. The shape of the roof and the ceiling refer to the roofs of the surrounding industrial buildings. Inside the smokestack hides the elevator, service riser and additional pillars which enhanced the construction of the smokestack. You can also reach the house by a spiral staircase.

We've wanted to create something unique, maybe crazy a little. We've been passing by the smokestack of the Old Wire Factory few times a week and we knew that it is very quiet and ambient place. Therefore, we thought that it would be a great place to live but not in the middle of it, above it. In fact, we haven't been looking for inspirations that time. We haven't seen anything like that before and it just came out of nowhere.

Our inspirations are architectural companies such as: BIG or SANAA, from the Poland it would be: KWK PROMES, Medusa Group. I don't know if we can give any pieces of advice beacuse we're still aspiring artists. But we think that to keep doing and improving your skills are the key to the success.
