“Spa” is a personal, non-commissioned project. I have always been very passionate about wellness and relaxation concepts and I had this idea of a wellness resort, which is thought to be somewhere in a cold and remote region, embedded in rough nature. I wanted to create a series of images that show some contrast, such as hot versus cold or rough versus smooth surfaces. I also have to say that my intention was not to design the entire resort as a whole and from an architectural point of view there are still many questions. It could even be a public as well as a private place.

The idea was to incorporate parts of nature into a spa concept. The facility consists of several steam rooms connected by wooden piers and surrounded by a shallow pool of cold spring water. I like simple forms, so the design is very reduced and geometric as opposed to the chaotic rocky surrounding. Even though I did not have a specific source of inspiration, the place reminds me very much of Iceland, which seems to be a great place of contrasts.

Of course, there are many different styles in computer graphics, but if you are after a rather photorealistic result, it certainly helps to have some knowledge and interest in photography. Focusing on materials and lighting are my favourite parts but I also think that good modelling skills are essential to achieve a great result.

Tobias Grendelmeier was born in Switzerland and currently living and working in the UK. For more than 8 years now, he has been involved in computer graphics, focusing mainly on interior- and product renders. After graduating from Zurich University of the Arts in product design he got straight into CG and worked for a Swiss architectural visualisation company for six years. Since then, he has always been particularly interested in the creation of photorealistic renders, he wanted to involve a bit more in photography so he spent four months as a photographer’s assistant at a Zurich-based studio, while still doing some personal CG work. In summer 2013 he moved to England and started a new job as a CG artist at a company that specialises in the creation of kitchen, bedroom and bathroom renders.
