The New Yorker is an American magazine of reportage, commentary, criticism, essays, fiction, satire, cartoons, and poetry. It is published by Condé Nast. Started as a weekly in 1925, the magazine is now published 47 times annually, with five of these issues covering two-week spans. For their, Crime Issue, they assigned Simone Massoni to create the illustrations. Let's sleuth his design!

This project is a series of ten spot illustrations done for the New Yorker’s Crime & Detective issue. I always try to imagine simple scenes taken from the everyday life and then mix them with common visual inputs coming from my visual experience, it can be a book a read, a movie I watched or a historical fact I know. With this design, there’s no particular inspiration since it is a commercial project, I begin to think of it only after the client asks me to do it, and the deadline is always tight.

Look! Here's a bonus that Simone sent us, an illustration that didn't make the cut in the magazine.

This fella-chef murdered by a carrot didn't make the cut to the printed mag. I thought of it as a dedication to all my veggie and vegan friends as a joke. The Art Director really loved it, but she thought the scene was to bloody for the magazine general tone. I agree 100% with her, but I just couldn't resist showing her anyway.

Simone Missoni is an independent visual artist, from Italy with a deep love for pizza. After starting his career as a children's book illustrator, he changed his interests to be aligned more with visual design and arts.
