This is an illustrated book I made based on the short story The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde. I gave the giant a modern look and character and played with views from different angles (from the giant's view, the children's view and sometimes a bird's eye view).

I wanted to bring to awareness the great author that is no longer alive and breathe a little of life into his work. My goal was to create something that would be attractive for today's children as well as for their parents who are just used to entertain their kids with a tablet by switching some game on. I believe that the essence of the books has not died yet. Even when the story is short there are many illustrations in the book. However I believe that the way those illustrations are created (different angles, picture continuing outside the pages etc) strengthens the children's imagination and trains their attention as the illustration on each page is intended to be observed for longer time. I believe that the illustrations in the book are unconventional and that children will have fun flicking through the pages. Moreover, the story is edifying, allegoric and the explanation is suitable to be discussed with the parents.

Firstly I read the story many times and analysed almost each sentence or every change in plot of the story. I thought about the sentences, words and paragraphs that are suitable for illustration, but also the ones that are not so easy to be illustrated and I tried to come up with the surprising or funny picture. I also added some words and parts that are not written in the story, that do not affect the story but serve as the enrichment of the book. I sketched on one single page all of the pages in the book to see them together and I played with them and modified them. Some of the illustrations I hand-drew firstly, some of them I only briefly sketched and some of them were created straight in the computer using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.

All of the people of different ages that I showed the book to loved it. Children, but also teenagers, adults and even older people were flipping through the book with curiosity and interest. Sometimes they were turning the pages back to see the illustration again and nobody skipped a single page. People say that this book should really be published. Its small size is suitable to take the book everywhere and it symbolises that the book can become a competitor with the games on the iphone.

I believe that the interactive games on mobile phones strengthens imagination of the children as well, however we should not forget about the ,,old static books" which can be animated only by children's mind and that is what I find the real magic in.
