Mary Stuart's project was born after 2 months of a life changing experience. She have worked with super skilled photographers from all over Europe and she thinks that this experience is clearly reflected in the highest quality and sensibility that this project presents.

My inspiration for this project came from one of Madonna's musicvideo: Frozen, and from one of the latest movie I saw: Macbeth direct by Justin Kurzel. The photography in that film was breathtaking. I wanted to communicate the sensation of something dark, poetic and epic. I've worked with the awesome Ria E. Mac Carthy ( the model ) several times, this time i wanted her to be something like and ancient oracle or a warrior's wife waiting ashore for the return of her man. No heavy makeup, no complicate styling, just her, the sea and the wind, and the intensity of her glance.

To be fair I'm very confused about my style. I see myself as a young photographer that has a lot to learn. One of the most difficult things for an artist is to have a particular style and be recognizable for that. I'm still researching and swinging between styles and visual suggestions. I can firmly say that my recurrent themes are: sensuality, femininity, waiting, solitude.
My inspirations are cinema and Edward Hopper above all. My photos are very bound to cinematography and to the framing techniques typical of the filming process.

My advice are substantially two: DON'T EVER GIVE UP. The main difference between a great artist and a mediocre artist is how much did you resist caring forward your passion over every difficulties or temporary defeats. The other advice is economical. I suggest to use your money to buy some good professional gear, even if at first you don't know how to use it, you'll be stimulated to learn faster, and follow a good photographer, if is possible as his assistant. Spending a lot of money in a photography school is totally useless.

I use two canon cameras: a 50d when I need something lightweight and a 5d mark II for the most important assignment. My favorite lens is canon 24-70 mark II L series. For the studio I prefer continuous lighting ( tungsten 1000watt ) or a couple of led panels. I also enjoy taking photos with my Polaroid 636 from The Impossible Project.

About Mary Stuart

Mary Stuart was born in Rome 30 years ago. Her first contact with photography was in 2007. It was a very bad year for her since she's been suffering from panic attacks and wasn't even able to get out of her room. Do during that Christmas her mom decided to buy her, her first camera, a canon 1000d. She said that would help her go out and distract herself from panic. And it worked. That camera healed her. Then people started to tell her that she was talented and continued taking photos. Mary studied at The Roman school of photography 7 years ago. She's not the kind of "maniac" photographer that knows everything technical or historical about photography. She studied analog photography, film development, dark room and so on but chose digital photography as her favorite media. She have done several exhibitions in Rome, Milan and during the last year she was one of the finalists of Celeste Prize. This year, she was selected among thousands of people as one of the 12 contestant of the first edition of Sky Arts Master Of Photography hosted by Isabella Rosellini with the participation of the great Oliviero Toscani and other legendary photographers. See more of her works on Behance or her Facebook Page.
