Filmmaker Chris Rudz really likes being in Japan, so he's spending a lot of time there. Each time, he's making pictures with his Sony A7 and trying to rediscover Japan from a different perspective. "Tokyo Flip" is the part of this process. He had a lot of fun trying to find something different each time within the places that he knows quite well already.

Exploring and having fun with a project is important part for me, because it makes me boldly go into undiscovered areas/styles and ideas. Design for this project come from curiosity about Tokyo's cityscape. Reflected image make me more aware about shapes and those shapes create character of the city. I'm curious about how things look when you look at them from different perspective or point of view. Quite often, I develop picture up side down, and immediately I got something fresh from it. I found that geometrical shapes are quite appealing to me. I was playing with those photos to create something that will intrigue me but also reveal Tokyo's urban character.

Fun and curiosity in general. I guess I also looked for something different than I already saw when I was looking at this city.

Quite often I hear that my work is "Magical" from the people that see it (mainly about my videos/films). Can "Magical" be a style? ;) I like clean forms, modest approach to visual language, but in the same time I love chaos, lots of colors and things that are fast, to give you just a glimpse. I guess I'm balancing somewhere in between and taking what both words can offer. Combining two things that are opposite to each other and make them work together it's something that brings me the most satisfaction.

Inspiration. That's a tough one. There are so many artists, directors, writers that inspire me, it's is hard to name them without mentioning the rest. Currently most of my inspirations comes from the internet. There are countless photographers, designs, ideas etc. Everyday I find something cool. Except many great western artists I look also at Chinese and Japanese directors and photographers. Their forms, colors and ideas they have. So different than the mainstream. That fascinates and inspires me.

There are a few artist I can mention who I can recommend to check it out. One is ZUMI, a Japanese director based in Tokyo. His crazy colors and visual style is really unique. Other one is Filip Piskorzynski. His visual aesthetic and storytelling are extraordinary. I'm also mostly inspired with his approach to work and life. Both are my friends and I had a pleasure to work with them. This thought me that inspiration works best when It's coming from people that are close to you. Your friends for example.

Work hard and always find way to enjoy what you do. Finish what you started, even if it will not be perfectly what you imagine at the beginning. That's a practical point, but except that. I would say, keep yourself open and curious in every aspect of life. It will make easy to inspire yourself. LOVE! In any form, it's a beautiful source of energy and inspirations. If you follow love, you will always find yourself in beautiful and good place.

About Chris Rudz

Chris Rudz was born in Poland. Everybody thought he'll be a professional sportsman, except his mom who (from what he imagine those times) would see him and his brother more as a priest. When he was about 13 years old, his friend showed him 3D program. He has never seen anything like it, but in seconds he made a ball, gave it some shades on it and render. Ever since, he fell in love with 3D. He has worked with 3D for about 15 years. In this time he made a few game as an animator and later as a Director. Later, he moved to Amsterdam for a new job, which soon he found out, he didn't liked so much. He learned that he's done with 3D and quit. After that, he signed up to an art school and had some time to play with film and photography. He was quite lucky to meet wonderful people who taught him a lot and soon enough he started to work as a Cinematographer and Director. Not so long ago he established along with his brother and few friends, a creative collective called DIGITAL AMIGOS. Aside from working at Digital Amigos he's currently working on his feature film debut. See more of his works on Behance or Vimeo.
