Top Gauge
Top Gauge, a redesign of the commonly used Tire Pressure Gauge. A visually elegant, yet functional, pressure reading tool that thrives on simplicity. It's refreshingly ergonomic form brings comfort into a space it belongs no where near. It addresses all the major problems of past pressure readers while incorporating new added features that current solutions have yet to catch on to.
Although current pressure gauge solutions were plagued with problems of comfort and function, we felt that certain aspects of the pen gauge and traditional round dial gauge made sense. It was just a matter of fusing these positive characteristics into a more complete design. We address ergonomics by designing the form of our product to have plenty of surface area for the user to grip. The dial also serves as the pressure reset button, ultimately saving space and providing a more intuitive experience. A handle was incorporated for storage purposes as well as two easily unscrewable halves which allow for simple replacement of parts if needed. The colors and materials match the Matco brand which we aimed to design for.
After consulting users and a local auto service shop owner we began our process. Early sketches and countless foam model iterations helped us understand the form we wanted to go for. Long discussions helped us design better ways to carry out the tool's purpose. CAD models were built based on more developed concepts, as well as exploded views of the inner components and eventually a final render.
The response to our idea has been incredible since its completion. People want tools that make things easier for them and I think we accomplished that in this project. Working with a group is a lot of fun and integrating everyone's design knowledge into one seamless product was an exciting challenge.
It is extremely important that people know this was a group project and my teammates Dan Shapiro, Nisha Panicker, and Bohan Zhang are equally responsible for this really fun design. We are just a few RIT undergraduate Industrial Designers trying to design cool stuff that makes life easier.
