At this point Robyn Pees' projects are still a way to try and find her own style. She has been working a lot with pencils, watercolor, paint and found that combining those two works well for her.

My work, which focuses at the moment on portraits of women (and the occasional man) is about creating something that is aesthetically beautiful, but also conveys emotions. Working with watercolor can be frustrating because it's impossible to really control what the paint does. I'm never sure how something will turn out when I start. Working with pencils is the opposite, it allows me a lot of control. Every line can be precisely the way I want it.

I'm inspired by a lot of things. I use Instagram to keep up on all my favorite artists, not just illustrators and painters, but also photographers and bloggers from around the world, I go to a museum at least once a week, and I'm inspired by everything that I see, hear and do on a daily basis. My portraits are often inspired by a photograph. Sometimes I choose to stay close to the original subject, but more often I just use it as a starting point.

I'm not sure I'm in the best position to give anyone advice, since I'm just starting out myself. But I guess I would say it's important to keep practicing and to accept that it’s going to take some time. Don't give up - but don't quit your day-job either ;)
