Winter Illustration by Morgan Ramberg
Christmas is fast approaching and let's get into the spirit of the holidays! Chicago-based illustrator Morgan Ramberg's project "Winter Illustration" is a greeting card for Walgreens. She was asked to "draw a reindeer pulling a sleigh full of presents for a holiday email" by her art director, thus the project.
I landed a job as Walgreens in-house illustrator a couple years back. About 70% of my job is creating photo cards, like the ones you get in the mail from your cousins every Christmas. Occasionally, my art director or a graphic designer will drop by and ask me to make something for their projects. In this case, the brief was, "draw a reindeer pulling a sleigh full of presents for a holiday email". Very formal. I knew this illustration needed to be bold since it would be the email's main image. I've been playing around with geometry and subtle textures in my personal work, and thought that aesthetic would work nicely here. I created the shapes in Illustrator, and added the textures in Photoshop.
I would describe my style as evolving. Lately, I've been trying to define what it is I do especially well, but I'm coming to terms with the idea that this is going to be a long process. The illustrators I admire most, like Sanna Mander, Ryo Takemasa, and Lilli Carre, have a real command of their voice. I create a piece, like it, and convince myself that THIS is the style I'll work in for the rest of my life. Until that magical moment arrives, I'll just keep trying to make projects I'm happy with, even if the style varies.
I find it helpful to revisit quick projects I worked on six months to a year ago, and edit or re-do them entirely. It's a little manic, but it gives me reassurance that I'm getting better at this thing. You need to pick at the scab, especially if you're just starting out. It's going to hurt, but look at what you've made and learn from the worst parts of your work. You'll do better next time.
