Word Play

Word Play is an ongoing project where puns, witticisms, or funny sayings are turned into eye-catching, fun posters. It started out as quick illustrations I would post up on instagram, but grew into one of my favorite ongoing projects. The look might potentially change or evolve as each new poster/idea demands.

I've been making simple, quirky illustrations in my sketchbook for quite some time, so coupling them with clever phrases and puns seemed like an interesting concept to explore. It started out as little illustrations I would put up on instagram, but I liked the concept so much that I continued to work on them. I plan on continuing this project and adding to it as time allows.

I started out drawing all of these by hand, and brought them into illustrator. All of these current posters were made before I had a tablet or a scanner, so I took a picture of my rough sketch using my iPhone and then uploaded it on illustrator from there. I used various textures, some from online resources and others I made myself, to add further detail to the vector shapes, and then brought the finished images into photoshop to add some more texture and color if necessary.

People responded well overall. This was one of the first illustration projects I ever did, so I learned a lot about the process as a whole. Since I was just beginning I was really getting a handle on how to properly refine my style and work with Illustrator. This is where I figured out that there is nothing more important than the initial sketch. It took me longer than I would have expected, but I really enjoyed the process from start to finish.
