Cherokee by Elliot Lim

Illustrator Elliot Lim's project "Cherokee" are the designs for a spot highlighting fall tourism in Cherokee, NC. They were produced for Charlex for Milepost 355 and Cherokee, NC. It is located in the Oconaluftee River Valley around the intersection of U.S. Route 19 and U.S. Route 441. The Great Cherokee Nation was once the largest of all southern tribes, with an estimated population of 25,000 prior to the arrival of European explorers.

The designs were based on a script from the agency. The only visual prompt was that it should be illustrative and colorful, highlighting the Autumn hues. I provided several different initial styles to chose from, and we narrowed it down from there.

I've always been a big fan of Charley Harper's work. He was able to capture nature so vividly in his illustrations, so his philosophy of using simplified, elegant shapes served as inspiration for my designs.

Overall, I gravitate towards illustrative and graphic styles. My inspiration comes from all over. Art, design, film, architecture, nature, everyday life. It's all fair game.

I think the biggest piece of advice I can give is to make the kind of things you like to make, and keep doing it until someone pays you for it. That's the best way to steer your career towards the type of work you enjoy doing.
