Dawn of Justice by Guilherme and Kime

Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman?! Everybody’s watching for these superheroes, with the release of the movie Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice – a follow-up to 2013’s Man of Steel and the second installment in the DC Extended Universe; illustraotrs Guilherme and Kime got so excited that they decided to make an art out of it. Now, let’s see their (illustration) powers!

We came up with the design by doing lots and lots of sketching and thumbnails, messing with different styles and proportions, until we reached the design we were looking for. We also reference a lot of artists we admire, to analyze their design solutions, color choices etc.

We were really excited to watch “Batman v Superman”, so I guess the main inspiration for this project was the increasing anxiety about the movie! We wanted to pay tribute to these beloved characters by drawing them in our own, particular way. Plus, it was a great opportunity to work on our character design and digital painting skills.

This is a tough question, since we feel we don’t have a particular style to call our own. We embrace experimentation and we spend a lot of time studying artists we admire, so our “style” is constantly changing from one work to the next. We are specially inspired by illustrators who showcase a variety of different styles and techniques, such as Kyle Webster, Peter Donnelly, Steve Simpson, Peskimo, among many others from different areas (such as character design, animation and fine arts).

We believe making art is a very humbling experience, in a way we are eternal beginners: there is always something new to learn and the road goes on forever. So our advice is: draw and paint as much as you can!! Make art everyday, even if you think it sucks! Embrace the mistakes as an integral part of the process and don’t give up. And the most important thing of all: have fun!
