Detroit City by Rasmus Jappe Kristiansen

Detroit is facing some huge challenges for the future and this requires change if we want to stop the negative stories and writings that mostly surrounds the city. Let’s focus on “The Good story” instead, and start sharing them with each other. The project aims to revitalize and shoot new energy into the city with a new identity. It symbolizes renewal and unity, but also conveys its history and cultural contributions to the American people. This is the case I did for my final exam at The School of Visual Communication in Haderslev, Denmark.

I came up with the idea of doing a full re-branding of Detroit doing my time as a Design Intern, in New York. I had to find a project for my final exam, and I thought this is really a challenge, with some possibilities for making some fun and exciting design. The City of Detroit is often surrounded by negative stories, so my first thought was; Let\'s put some color on the city, and so I did. The colors also work as dividers between subjects about the city.

I started out sketching with a pen and paper. From there on I moved to the computer, where I started out creating the logo and exploring the colors, this was done in Adobe Illustrator. Here I also made all the different small elements to illustrate the story about the city. Web and mobile design was made in Adobe Photoshop. The editorial layout was made Adobe Indesign and so was the finale case, before it was handed over to the school.

People has responded very well, they seem to like the colorful expression and well, it gave me an A+ for the final exam! It kind of summed up all I have learned doing my education in Visual Communication.
