A quote from René Magritte once said "Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us. This interest can take the form of a quite intense feeling, a sort of conflict, one might say, between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present." This piece might just best describe Andre Rucker's project Facades, read on to see his photographs.

The Facades series is actually based on Bernhard and Hilla Becher and their typologies of water towers and different architectural structures. They would go out of their way to photograph every structure from the same angle, same relative height, same lighting and so forth then displayed them in grids. I combined that with another idea that I had to kind of play with depth and texture by covering people's faces with the same texture that's behind them.

I take each photograph at the same focal length, same relative height and try to get each person into the same straight positioning. A lot of the images were shot in the studio, some are outside or at specific locations. The series started off a little more straightforward as far as patterns or textures then became more conceptual with the x-ray image and the camera image. I just try to take each image in a different direction while obeying enough of the rules for it to remain relevant to the others in the series.
