Want to teach your kids good spending habits? Then, check this out! The Good Piggy Calculator project was assigned to Graphic Designer, Angela Wang during her time as a student. The brief was to design an online calculator to teach elementary school kids (around age 10) good spending habits/money saving skills and also for their parents to check on their progress. Angela created the logo, layout, icons and graphics.

With this project, the challenge for me was designing for the population. I've been out of elementary school for a while now and therefore, had no idea what 10-year-olds are into nowadays. I began my research by looking at popular TV shows and toys (I wasn't even sure if 10-year-olds played with toys anymore). I drew the color scheme and icon style from a combination of popular kids shows and digital learning games. I wanted the design to be fun and cute but at the same time clean and hip. I used bright but comforting colors, rounded icon/graphic style, and bold fun type to achieve this look. Other than the crumpled paper texture, I created the rest of the graphic elements on Illustrator and the layout in Photoshop.

My main inspiration was a modified version of my 10-year-old self. I wanted to create something that 10-12-year-old me would have liked. I aimed the age a little higher because kids nowadays are way more mature and connected to the world than those of my generation. I drew inspiration from the top 3 shows on Cartoon Network (Uncle Grandpa, Adventure Time and Steve Universe) which all were slightly edgy but at the same time still very cute and colorful. For layout inspiration, I looked at several educational websites/mobile apps that have pretty good flows such as Duolingo, CodeAcademy and Lumosity.

I think the edge of this design is that I was able to create a look and feel that was just the right maturity for the population. I had a lot of fun designing for kids of the world and also imagining myself as a little kid again without overshooting.

I would describe my style as fun, clean, and thoughtful. I really love colors and patterns but most importantly, I love a good concept. Although I spend hours on design blogs, Pinterest and Behance marveling at beautiful design, my main source of inspiration comes from feelings and experiences in my day-to-day life including anything from listening to a badass song to watching a colorful sunset.

I don't feel qualified to give out advice on design but a piece of perspective on life in general: Trust yourself and be nice to others.
