Handlterred Logotypes & Marks by Ginger Monkey

This project by Tom Lane also known as Ginger Monkey is a collection of the marks, custom type, and logos he have created for companies over the last couple of years. Also, the project contains a number of his sketches and development work as everything he produce starts with pencil and paper.

I try to gain as much information from the client about the project at the beginning as I can. I then research and brainstorm. Once I feel settled in I’ll light sketch thumbnails to start to build ideas and compositions. I will select some thumbnails to move forward with and develop a rough drawing. If that works well I’ll scan into the computer, maybe tweak some aspects, set out some guides and then print a copy. Then I use the print out as a base for working a final drawing on my light box.

Too many to list for each one but I’m inspired by all sorts of things. It can be a bit of type on an ad, the mark on a wine bottle, something someone says, a passage in a book. Life throws up so much inspiration. You just need to keep your eyes and ears open.

From this project you can see I work in many different styles but usually they have a link to traditional processes and mark making. My type designs a underpinned by calligraphic styles developed over hundreds of years, my illustrations have vibes drawn from turn of the 1900 century steel etchings and lino cuts.

As I mentioned above, keep your eyes and ears open. By that I mean be curious. Follow that curiosity and you’ll always have something to draw from. Study, study study and practice, practice, practice. There are absolutely no short cuts. You have to learn and put it into practice everyday to hone in your skills and find your voice.
