Øystein Aspelund worked a lot with the selection and sequencing with this series. The project can be seen as a secluded narrative, but the images spans from a lot of different locations. The story between each frame is as important as the frame itself, the viewer has to fill in the gaps.

I used the subject sub consciousness as an inspiration, and man and his relation to the landscape as an investigative tool. This series is visually dark, and largely shot at night, when most people sleep. Sleep can be seen as a kind of “Hibernation,” which is a subject that I find rather fascinating. Normally animals hibernate, but also humans can hibernate, in several different ways. I have a fascination for the dark hours, when the world appears very different. Lights are turned on, and artificial lightening illuminates the landscape instead of the sun and the daylight. We have a lot of artificial lightening in Norway, and the winter season here where I live is rather dark. Many people say that they enter a kind of hibernation state of mind during these winter months.

I seek to have a cultural presence in my work. I am attracted to the transition between nature and culture. This has its origin from my background in architecture, among other things. I see my works as rather “quiet” and minimalistic. I prefer not to explain my works too much, but let it appear in a way that can give the viewer his/hers own unique interpretation.

There is a lot of really great photographers out there, it is hard to limit it to a few names. At least I can say that the works of Andreas Gursky, Richard Mosse, David Burnett, Vincent Fournier, Michael Wesely, Nadav Kander, Evgenia Arbugaeva, and Wolfgang Tillmans has made a very strong impression on me. I also find it very interesting to study contemporary artists and their way of working and thinking.

Learn from good artists, the best onesJ Try not to copy but create and develop your own voice and style. Photography is visual expression, but I believe it is important to always have a strong idea or a concept behind your work. It will make it stronger, more coherent and more lasting. I think it is also a good idea to specialize in one genre/photographic style, so that it is easy and convenient for people to follow your work. I think it is good if people are able to read your projects as a complete body of work.

For this project I used mostly a Nikon D800(with 24-70mm/14-24mm Nikon lenses) and a manfrotto tripod.
