Otherworldly Blues by Joni Niemelä

Otherworldly Blues is Joni Niemelä's second photo series of an alien-like carnivorous plant called Sundew (Drosera). His first photo series is entitled as 'Drosera'. Drosera, is one of the largest genera of carnivorous plants, with at least 194 species. These members of the family Droseraceae lure, capture, and digest insects using stalked mucilaginous glands covering their leaf surfaces.

This is my second photo series of these plants called Sundews. The first photo series is titled as 'Drosera' - an alien-like carnivorous plant. My main goal was to have this dreamy, otherworldly and eerie feeling in these photos which isn't usually an easy task when talking about macro photos.

These plants have always fascinated me and I have been photographing Sundews on each summer for several years now. My photos of Sundews have been mostly bright and full of colours and that's why I wanted to have some contrast to that. I think the colors and the mood of "Otherworldly Blues" reflect aptly the true nature of these carnivorous plants. I used Pentax K-3 and Nikon D800 for this series. Lenses which I used were normal 100mm macro and to really get close to the subject I used extension tubes with reverse attached 50mm prime lens.

Actually there was no photographer to inspire me to do these Sundew series but I do like to explore works of Marc Adamus and Alexandre Deschaumes for example. My advice to fellow photo enthusiast is have patience and try to do your own thing.
