Visual Designer Caleb Warren's "Verse of the Day" was a project for the YouVersion Bible app. The app has over 200 million downloads, so this project was a little intimidating for Caleb knowing the scale that his work would be seen. Every day, the app has a new "verse of the day" where you can see a new scripture reference with an associated image alongside of it. This project was to create 30 of those images.

Through all 30 images, you'll see many different styles of design. This was the perfect project for me to explore different styles and use different mediums to portray each verse uniquely. I used photography that I had taken throughout the past few years and that was relevant to the verse rather than a generic stock image.

The verses themselves. Scripture is inspired and inspiring. I tried to get to the heart of the verse to communicate the message through the design. Many of the verses had strong words that were easily translated to visuals. An example would be Ecclesiastes 11:5 describing the path of the wind. As you can see in the artwork, I capitalized on that visual by making the text flow along with the wind illustration.

The more styles you explore, the more your style is refined. I try to explore many styles whether I am designing images like these or a website. As I've been developing my style, I find that it usually moves towards a clean, minimal, and somewhat basic layout. If the design solves a problem with just a few words, then why not solve it with a few words.

Balance your input and output. Balance what you are learning and what you are creating. If you find yourself only learning, you may be in trouble, because you need to be creating as well to gain experience and real-world application. If you find yourself only creating, you may be in trouble, because you need to be learning as well to grow your skill set and expand your knowledge of your craft. Always be learning AND creating. Never just one. Balance your input and output.

  1. This is the exact kind of work that I aspire to do! I love learning from other people's work and really taking in all the advice that they have to give, so I appreciate this post quite a bit! I hope that one day I can have at least a fraction of the talent and success that I see here, but until then I will keep practicing.
