Yogactivities by Thomas Hedger

Thomas Hedger wanted to show with his illustrations how meditation can transcend the traditional act. Yoga, a physical, mental, and spiritual practice or discipline which originated in India is one of the most popular way to meditate and his subject for 'Yogactivities'.

Looking at yoga postures inspired the drawings; I liked the shapes that could be created. Overall I aimed to show how meditation can go beyond the act of meditating in the traditional sense by incorporating activities to do with breathing techniques and healthy lifestyle choices.

I visited the Tibet’s Secret Temple exhibition at the Wellcome Trust; it was full of fascinating artworks and artefacts all centred around the Body, Mind and Meditation in Tantric Buddhism. I was captivated by the use of sand art, whereby incredible sand sculptures are painstakingly created, then blow away as an act of meditation. I wanted to create something that could allow people to understand more about this process in a relatable way, by using less complex creative activities as meditation, which are completed on a disposable sheet.

I feel like my style is still evolving but I enjoy utilising negative space and block colours, simplifying without quite deconstructing. I’m inspired by the everyday; I especially enjoy the process of turning something banal into a finished piece, like a rubbish bag or a lamp post. Just do what you enjoy and keep doing it, find a way to make it work.
