“Ten for Ten - A Guide to Lisbon” by graphic designer Ruben Mangorrinha is, as the name suggests, a guide for visitors and locals to experience Lisbon, featuring a Top 10 structure in several categories.

“Ten for Ten” means hitting all the marks, and that’s the point of this guide. It aims to give a broad insight into the city, not missing any of its essential points. It takes us on a journey to uncover the best of Lisbon with a native insight, combining the tips and historical info of a traditional guide, in a clear and simple way, with a hip and modern approach. The point is to renew the tourist guide experience, likening it to a “pocket friend” on which you can count whenever you want, giving good advice in a no-fuss way.

The guide is divided into categories, fun facts, advice and useful info. The categories range from architecture, culture and arts, markets and stores, to restaurants and nightlife, resulting in a Top 10 list for each one. The fun facts tell small stories about Lisbon, such as the origin of the “alfacinhas”, the nickname given to the locals, so you can get up close and personal with the city.

The design of this project is a mix of influences. I wanted something very informative, clear and exact, as well as modern, but with a touch of color and fun. Hence the high detail illustrations – so they can fulfill their informative and referential purpose - but with a cool and fun side to them.

The inspiration for this work came after a trip to Barcelona, where the usual free guides and maps to the city were of little use. Even sifting through the ones available in souvenir shops, I noticed a lack of warmth and human touch to them, a lack of a relatable local perspective that would have been more than welcome. So from that came the idea of doing something like that for Lisbon, to help visitors feel more in touch with the city, the people who actually live in it, their habits and way of life.

I wouldn’t say that I have a well-defined style yet, but I think there’s always some part of me that comes out reflected in my work. My educational background is in arts, so there’s always this pervasive need to make something that’s different and impacting, which isn’t always possible, but I try anyway! After coming up with an idea you believe in, just break it down so you don’t feel overwhelmed, try to minimize problems and just start building your puzzle, one step at a time.
