Rosa De Jong's project "Micro Matter" is a series of miniature worlds. The inspiration for this project came when Rosa became aware of the fact that if you look at an art it would be really cool if you can go 'into the art’. So, this is what Rosa did, she created a small world inside a glass tube.

It can still be abstract, but I really love it if there is "space" inside, a small world to go to. This makes looking at it a little bit like meditation, instead of thinking, you get to be inside for a moment. So with this realization, I started making miniature cities with a metro going through. Summer was slow on design work and I needed to make something to keep myself happy. Then, I got mixed up with the mechanism; I wanted to slow down the train, started mixing gears, got confused and abandoned the project.

After the summer I bought the tubes, but because I buy so much stuff just because I like it and I think someday I will do something with it, I forced myself to make something with it right away. Then Micro Matter happened! I use all kind of things, one for example was made with a tree (well, a stick) that my cat brought in, I used sand I’ve got in Monument Valley for the tipi, and the rocks around the campfires at the campsites are actually grains of sand I brought from Curacao. It’s not so much that I want the ingredients to have a special meaning; it’s just that I’m looking for something I need around my house and I bump into these things.

Some of them are made in less than half a day, they just happen. Others take me days. I wouldn’t be working on them for days, but I look at it, think about it, do something small, and have to think about it again. Those are often the best ones though. While making them, there’s a point where they come alive, that’s the moment it really starts being fun.

I’m not good with long projects, so I wonder how long this project can give me the feeling there’s more in there. Until now it hasn’t got boring. I still feel like there are more worlds to create.

Don’t get distracted by creative work you see on the internet. Inspiration is good but can be overwhelming sometimes. Focus on where your ideas are really coming from, and why.
