Bathroom accessories concept design inspired by material duality and contrast. The imagery of mixed and contrasting materials and shapes was used as input and 1:1 scale drafts were used to create and refine the shapes. Making use of curves, circles and cutting patterns a minimalistic design language proposal was developed.

A client asked me to design a small batch of design bathroom accessories that focused on material quality and craftsmanship. As it was a first stage development and having a tight budget and timeframe, the best idea for material exploration was to at least simulate the interaction between different materials and shapes in at least a visual sphere. Several high res simples images of primary and conventional materials were combined and arranged in diverse positions and in a systematic way in order to create as many combinations as possible. After the creation of this combinations, the ones that were caught more attention were selected and the reasoning that resulted from a deeper analysis of them was translated into several thumbnails sketches that were later on developed as 1:1 scale drafts for better understanding of shapes and solutions and also refinement of ideas.

At the begging I made use mainly of Photoshop for quick generation of "mixed material" alternatives.
After that, only manual paper thumbnail sketches and drafts were made before the 3D phase.
For 3D development I used Solidworks and for the 3D renderings I used Keyshot.

The project was aesthetically well received by the client. However the client's manufacturing capabilities led us to follow another direction for the final design. For the price that the client wanted this product to be sold on the market, this solution would be too expensive and time consuming. It would require highly specialised craftsmanship.

My background is in Industrial Design. I have worked with product design, transportation (bicycles), furniture and interactive spaces at studios in Brazil and remotely for start-ups worldwide. My approach to design is minimalist, detail and research oriented. I make constant use of my knowledge of Human Centred Design, Ergonomics and Rapid Prototyping. I’m quite interested in experiences that are a result of interactions between humans and physical matter.
