Max-Dohrn Straße Berlin by Jakub Sobiczewski
The 'Max-Dohrn Straße' by Jakub Sobiczewski is a visualization for the project of a great, Berlin-based architecture studio - Carlos Zwick Architekten. It's a concept for a New Administration and Production Building for BaumerHübner GmbH in Berlin.
I was asked to transform old and raw renderings into something more realistic and attractive. There were 2 views that the author liked: a street-view perspective and an aerial shot, so there was no need to make a 3d model. I could have focused 100% on Photoshop work. I also made a bonus rainy version of the aerial view. It was one of my first professional works and the architect (C. Zwick) gave me total freedom during the creation process. It was really fun to create.

One of our specific skills is old render renovations. Many architectural studios aren't always satisfied with the results of rendering they've made in the past. They want to present their project on their website or portfolio but some renderings are just out-of-date. Fortunately, we specialize in transforming old and unattractive renderings into something brand new.

I really like taking pictures of the buildings in the morning, when the streets are quiet and empty. That's why I wanted to make something similar, like a morning after the rain picture. To create a story in the scene, I added two men carrying a kayak. Maybe they're going kayaking in the nearby Spree river? Who knows...

Basically, our style has evolved with the years, but we always attempt to create something more than just an ordinary depiction of a building. A lot depends on clients and what they expect, however, our goal is to always be as realistic as possible, but with a unique atmosphere. We're also both architects, so we know that showing a project in an interesting way is very important. Personally, I have experience with German and American architecture and my colleague, Tomasz Szukała, worked in French studios, so I think this gives our work a very balanced style.

As for the software, we have a diverse program expertise, however, for most of our projects we use Rhinoceros for 3d modeling, Maxwell Render for rendering, and Adobe Photoshop for post-production or old render renovations. This combination works for us perfectly.

We take influence from diverse fields, but for me, the biggest influence is definitely photography. Because, at first, I started photographing architecture, I take a lot of influence from the "Photography world". Obviously, we really admire work from great studios like MIR, Brick, Arqui9, Polish Motiv Studio or Plankton Group, but there are a lot of not-so-well-known CG artist that are simply outstanding and very inspirational for us.

Architectural visualization is a giant market and unfortunately, smaller companies have a hard time breaking through...We also don't have huge experience, so we're trying to develop all the time. I think that the most important thing is to find your own style and be consistent about it. For me, it's also important to try new things. I highly recommend learning some different tools other than the most popular software like 3ds Max + V-Ray. The other thing is training and making progress. To achieve some great results you need to learn all the time, practice your skills and be open for criticism. Don't be afraid of asking others for advice or constructive critique. Don't ever be afraid of failing, and keep going further!
