Renovation of "Red Triangle"

This project is a renovation of the abandoned territory of “Red Triangle” – one of the oldest factories in Saint Petersburg. The site has a lot of potential in terms of city development, as it is not only located right between downtown and its outskirts, but also very accessible by all means of public and private transport.

When it comes to adaptive reuse, my proposal is to turn the whole territory of “Red Triangle” into creative cluster. With that in mind, I decided that the main center of attraction would be the exhibition center – or Red Tower. Its first floor serves as a lobby, from where one can go either to exhibition pavilions, or, using an elevator, to the panoramic café upstairs.

The idea of a tower came to me after the site analysis – its huge area of 40 ha needs a high point to make navigation around it easier. As for design solution, my inspiration for the tower was industrial architecture, where the structure usually serves two purposes at the same time – function and design. This applies for exhibition pavilions as well, where I decided to use plastic as the main material. It provides diffused lighting for the interior during the day and, depending of the color of inner lights, makes the look of exterior change in the evening.

I used Rhinoceros to build the site model and most of the exhibition center, but the tower itself was made in Grasshopper. Applying “Make2d” command allowed me to make isometric views of the site and the building. To make perspective views I exported everything to 3ds max and rendered my scenes with Corona, which, thanks to its Interactive mode, were fairly easy to set. Therefore I spend most of my time in post-production in Photoshop, editing my renders and presentation board.

This project is my Bachelor Thesis and its presentation went really well. I can also say that I had good feedback on the social networks where I’ve posted it.
At this point it’s the most time-consuming project that I have ever worked on and it has surely improved my technical and professional skills.
