Trace a Line by Thibault Daumain
This project is a series of hand drawn posters of Thibault Daumain. He created those for the 2014-2015 season's events organized by his friends from the french cultural webzine Trace A Line.
The name Trace A Line is a tribute to a song by Au Revoir Simone released a few month before the blog was created. They all were playing it over and over again at the time, so it seemed obvious to name the blog after it. Plus it sounded quite nice as well.

Trace a Line is a cultural webzine created in november 2009 by a friend and his three partners. For four years posts and podcasts kept coming, until they decided it was time to throw their first party at Batofar in Paris, for Trace A Line's fourth birthday in november 2013. Some other gigs followed, now they are throwing one party every 3 months.

Inspiration:
This series of techno music events took place at the Batofar (diminutive of « bateau-phare », literally « lighthouse boat »). This famous and singular parisian concert hall is actually a boat moored on the docks of the Seine, with a lighthouse at its top. I wanted to create a series of posters wich could evoke a sound tempest, a dark and chaotic sea of music in which sails and shines the Batofar. I was inspired by meteorologic, topographic and fluid mechanics imagery.- Thibault Daumain
The process contains a large part go "controlled randomness". The initial phase is fast and gestural. It consists to build composition, graphic masses and global dynamic by spreading graphite powder directly with fingers on a grainy sheet of thick white paper. The second phase is much longer and precise. I draw and contrast abstract textures with a thin mechanical pen and an eraser to make pattern and forms emerge. Finally I add colored atmospheres with Photoshop and build the final posters with inDesign. I used graphite, mechanical pen, Photoshop and inDesign for this project.
